Cross-species Gene database records are grouped by similarity of gene names and symbols. These genes are annotated with terms in the structured vocabularies maintained by the Gene Ontology Consortium. Annotations are acquired from the NCBI Gene database.
These ontologies describe gene products in terms of their associated biological processes, cellular components, and molecular functions—in a species-independent manner. They are structured as directed acyclic graphs.

The Gene Ontology that contains the term.
The unique identifier(s) assigned to the term by the Gene Ontology Consortium. Also displayed are any alternate or obsolete GO IDs, and links to external GO Browsers. The primary ID is shown in bold.

The Gene Ontology vocabularies are structured hierarchically as directed acyclic graphs. A child (more specialized) GO term can have multiple parents (less specialized terms). Each path from the root of the hierarchy to the term is presented separately, with both the ancestor path and descendant terms shown. Nodes are indented to indicate their relative level in the hierarchy. A node marked by the symbol has descendants that are not shown on the current page.

A child term can have one of several different relationships to its parent(s), one type per parent. Icons represent the types of relationship types.
