Overview

CTD's organism vocabulary consists of vertebrates and invertebrates in the group Eumetazoa, as defined in the NCBI Taxonomy Database. The vocabulary is structured as a tree hierarchy.

Furthermore, the database does not follow a single taxonomic treatise but rather attempts to incorporate phylogenetic and taxonomic knowledge from a variety of sources, including the published literature, web-based databases, and the advice of sequence submitters and outside taxonomy experts. Consequently, the NCBI taxonomy database is not a phylogenetic or taxonomic authority and should not be cited as such.

Names, Synonyms, etc.

The formal scientific name (genus and species, where appropriate) of the organism, and, where available, common names, equivalent terms, synonyms, and other names assigned by NCBI.

Rank

The rank of the organism in the taxonomic tree (e.g., species, genus, family).

NCBI Taxonomy ID

NCBI's unique identifier for the organism.

Comments added by a CTD curator.

Top ↑ Hierarchies

The organism vocabulary is structured as a tree hierarchy. Each taxon occupies a single location (“node”) in that tree. Nodes are indented to indicate their relative level in the tree. A node marked by the + symbol has descendants that are not displayed on the current page.

Click a term in the ancestor path to move up the tree, or click a descendant node to move down. The highest level of the taxonomic tree represented in CTD is Eumetazoa, although its ancestor nodes are shown to provide context.
